✨Growing Together: A Newsletter on DIR/Floortime ✨
Welcome Back!
In our last issue, we explored the foundations of DIR/Floortime—a powerful way to connect with children through play. Today, we’re bringing it home with simple, everyday ideas you can use to build emotional connection, spark communication, and support development right where you are.
🏡 Why Floortime at Home Matters
Your home is your child’s most natural learning environment. DIR/Floortime doesn’t require special toys or a therapy room—it just needs your time, presence, and curiosity. The moments you share during daily life are full of opportunities to follow your child’s lead and build developmental skills in a relaxed, familiar setting.
💡Easy Floortime Ideas for Every Day
Here are 6 low-stress, high-connection activities you can try at home:
1. The Blanket Game (Ages 2–6)
🛏️ Toss a light blanket over your child and gently say, “I can't find you.... Where did you go?” Peekaboo-style games invite anticipation, shared joy, and turn-taking.
Floortime Tip: Pause to let your child respond or take the lead—“Do you want to hide me next?” or "I really want to hide next. My turn!"
2. Laundry Basket Ride (Ages 3–8)
🧺 Let your child sit in a laundry basket and pull them around the room. Add sound effects or pretend you’re on a rocket ship.
Floortime Tip: Narrate and expand their ideas—“You’re steering! Are we going to the moon or the jungle?”
3. Kitchen Helpers (All Ages)
🥣 Invite your child to help stir, pour, or taste during cooking. It’s great for motor planning and sensory engagement.
Floortime Tip: Let them choose ingredients or name dishes to add their unique perspective.
4. Puppet Talk (Ages 2–10)
🧸 Use stuffed animals or socks to act out conversations, emotions, or little stories. Puppets give children a safe way to express feelings.
Floortime Tip: Join their world by copying their character voices or scenarios.
5. Mirror Play (All Ages)
🪞 Make funny faces in the mirror together. Imitate each other or try emotion faces—“Show me your silliest face!”
Floortime Tip: Use this moment to build emotional awareness and co-regulation.
6. Obstacle Course (Ages 3–10)
📦Use pillows, tunnels, or boxes to create a mini indoor course. Let your child design part of it.
Floortime Tip: Make statements like “Hmm, I'm not sure where I should we do next... I need some help!” to boost flexible thinking.
🪜3 Golden Rules for Home Floortime
-
Follow their interest: If they want to line up cars, line up cars! Then, add a twist to expand their thinking.
-
Be emotionally present: Your engagement is more important than any toy.
-
Go slow, stay curious (not judgmental): Allow space for your child to show you how they see the world. Avoid correcting them. Make statements like, "tell me more!" or "that sounds like a wonderful idea."
💭A Parent’s Reflection:
“I used to think play needed to be structured to be ‘educational.’ Now I know that every silly moment is a chance for connection and growth.”
